The Expeditions of Bike Colombia take us to discover hidden wonders of Colombia, where a logistic of support and a good team of guides is not a luxury but a key part of the experience. The idea Is to revive the experience of the ancient explorers, to explore trails with spectacular landscapes and to share with a small and exclusive group of people who come together to meet a goal: to overcome the challenge of completing the expedition. It’s Not a competition, it’s not just a bike ride, it’s an adventure…
Among the sites we explore in this route is:
- Natural Pools of various colors formed by water in the bedrock of the river.
- The Tunnels: Caverns and crevices that cross the mountain.
- The Stone City: Rock Formations resembling streets, highways and buildings.
- Paintings of Tolima: Cave Paintings on the cliffs of the Serranía.
- Paintings and Cave of the Hill: a spectacular place full of cave paintings, jungle and caverns.
- The rapids: A Canoe trip through the canyon that forms the river, sighting of pink dolphins and the last site with cave paintings.
- The famous Orion’s gate rock formation and its surroundings
Each day we rode to new wonders, with the support and logistics needed in such an adventure.
Itinerary
day 1: The welcome ritual
The meeting will be in the town of San José del Guaviare on Wednesday afternoon at the hotel headquarters of the expedition. We will Conduct a Briefing meeting, an introduction to the area and an indigenous culture visit with a welcome ritual including dancing and food. We will Take a joint dinner and we will make a tour of the Malecon of the city on the Guaviare river.
Day 2: SINGLETRACKS AND TUNNELS TO REACH ORION'S GATE
We will Start the adventure with a warm up ride by paved and gravel road to reach the Tunnel sector. From Here we start a hike that will take us to visit the first impressive rock formations that this serrranía has to offer. Explore the network of multiple tunnels and crevices that cross the hill. We will definitely be surprised by this place and to finish we will take a bath in a real natural Jacuzzi of crystalline waters before returning to our bikes.
From There we’ll follow a spectacular trail, only suitable for Bicycles, and unknown to most people that will take us to the heart of the mountain and then approach another of the icons of this place: Orion’s Gate.
We will make a lunch stop and then continue pedaling along a mixed stretch of paved road and ground until we reach our place of stay in cabins near a beautiful lagoon formed by the river.
Day 3: BRIDGES, RAPIDS AND ANCIENT PAITINGS
We Leave early in the morning for a ride with a few climbs and then we will take a boat trip to get through this area of walls, river beaches and stones that channel the great Guayabero River passing trough a canyon with rapids. We will Take a walk to a spectacular viewpoint watching on the road the first cave paintings part of the world heritage sites of UNESCO. We will Be accompanied by a local guide. We will get a chance to see the wild pink dolphins in the river.
After the boat ride we’ll go to our lodging place a few kilometers up the road. This place is unique as it blends the cabins and the pool with the rocky landscape.
Day 4: The ride discovering the paintings and the Lindosa Sierra
We leave early to visit two archeological sites coverded with ancient paintings, some of them as old as 8000 years, atop the beautiful rocky wall of the Lindosa Sierra. On the first site of Cerro Azul (Blue Hill) we’ll get to know the people that started the preservation and study of these amazing paintings. As they guide us into the meaning and significance of the site we will also enjoy panoramic views and continue towards a cave that crosses the mountain. We will go on and do a good stage of pedaling along a very beautiful route of rocky cliffs and local farms and then reach the last archaeological site on our trip.
At the end of the ride we will reach a local farmstay that also serves as a Yoga center. We will be free to take some classes to stretch after all the riding and see the way they get in touch with nature.
Day 5: return to rock city and the human city
Today we will visit the rock formations that resemble a miniature city getting there on our bikes and then walking around the area, through the buildings, highways and skyscrapers. After this we will go back in our bikes to go to the wonderful river pools which have formed after millions of years. During this hike we will be able to take a good swim and relax from the previous days adventure. We will have lunch there in an outdoor restaurant, enjoy a beer or two and get back to our bikes for the final stretch that will get us to the city of San José del Guaviare.
Day 6: The waterfall and the red colored river
After a good night’s sleep, we will take breakfast and head for our last ride towards the Delicias waterfall. This is the biggest, and some say, most beautiful waterfall in the area. This ride includes a bit of pavement and then dirt roads ending in a climb and a short hike to the location. Then we will go and see the red colored river in Tranquilandia which is a wonder that you can only experience in this area of the country and nowhere else in the world. The river’s color is given by a special kind of acquatic plant that turns red in the rainy season. We’ll be back for lunch and to pack to catch the flight back to Bogotá in the afternoon.
